About the Green Skills Map

Green Skills Map is an open-source framework initiated by HolonIQ for the purpose of cataloging, evaluating, and contextualizing the different components of the rapidly expanding field of green jobs. This comprehensive taxonomy will serve as a resource for understanding the full spectrum and complexity of green skills required across various sectors, thereby enabling a cohesive approach toward achieving net zero and decarbonizing the global economy.

This established taxonomy serves as a foundational tool for aligning educational efforts, workforce development, and policy initiatives with the goals of a sustainable and resilient economy.

Green Skills Map is structured into eleven areas, each representing a critical facet of green skills required for addressing environmental challenges and accelerating the transition to a more sustainable economy. These areas include Enabling Skills, Natural Capital Skills, Food System Skills, Circular Economy Skills, Carbon Market Skills, Green Data & Finance Skills, Green Resource Skills, Renewable Energy Skills, Green Grid Skills, Built Environment Skills and Green Mobility Skills. The taxonomy goes on to delineate sub-areas that reflect the specific domain of competence necessary. It further divides these sub-areas into Green Skills clusters, where related skills are grouped for easier identification.

This taxonomy is designed to facilitate answering several questions that have emerged in the green skills space. Which green jobs are required to support the global energy transition? Which technical specializations are essential for supporting infrastructure and innovation in this transition? Where are emerging green skills concentrated? What is the scope and range of green skills available within each core area? Which gaps in skills availability have arisen? To this end, pinpointing sub-areas and green skills clusters is crucial for guiding resource allocation and decision-making. Further, it can guide professionals in making informed career decisions by helping them identify career paths that align with both industry needs and personal career development goals.

Given the rapidly evolving nature of the field of green jobs, Green Skill Map utilizes a collaborative and open-source approach. Feedback from users and experts is encouraged to ensure that this framework is an evolving resource.
